Labuan Bajo to Kelimutu by Car | Private Driver

Labuan Bajo to Kelimutu is an overland drive of roughly 430–460 km along the Trans-Flores highway, realistically 12–14 hours of pure driving — which is why almost nobody does it in one day. The sensible way is a private car with an English-speaking Flores driver, split over two or three days with overnight stops in Ruteng or Bajawa and a final night in Moni, so you reach the Kelimutu viewpoint before sunrise instead of arriving exhausted at noon. Komodo Airport Car Rental runs this route as a fixed-fare private charter quoted in US dollars, with pickup straight from Komodo Airport (LBJ) arrivals or your hotel in Labuan Bajo.

What exactly is Kelimutu, and why drive instead of fly?

Kelimutu is a volcano in Kelimutu National Park, central Flores, holding three crater lakes that sit side by side yet hold different colours — Tiwu Ata Bupu, Tiwu Ko’o Fai Nuwa Muri and Tiwu Ata Polo. The colours shift over time as the water chemistry changes; turquoise, dark green, black, brown and occasionally red have all been recorded. Nobody can promise you a specific colour on a specific morning, and any operator who does is guessing.

You can fly Labuan Bajo–Ende and rent a car there, but schedules on that sector are thin and change often. For most travellers the road itself is the point: rice terraces at Cancar, the mountain air of Ruteng, the cone of Inerie above Bajawa, traditional villages, hot springs, and the coastal run into Ende. It is paved but narrow and constantly winding — a route for a driver who knows it, not a self-drive experiment.

How is the drive split day by day?

We build the itinerary around driving hours, not distance, because Flores roads average 35–45 km/h. These are the splits we run most often as of 2026:

Day Leg Approx. distance Driving time
Day 1 Labuan Bajo → Ruteng → Bajawa ~260 km 7–9 hours with stops
Day 2 Bajawa → Ende → Moni ~170 km 5–6 hours with stops
Day 3 Moni → Kelimutu sunrise → onward ~13 km to the park gate 30–40 minutes plus the walk

A slower three-night version adds an overnight in Ruteng, so Day 1 ends after four hours instead of nine — worth it with children or older parents. Want the volcano-and-village stretch without the full push? Stop at Bajawa and turn back. Flying out of Ende? End the charter with our Labuan Bajo to Ende one-way service.

What is included in a Kelimutu charter?

  • Private vehicle, no sharing. Toyota Avanza or Innova Reborn for 2–4 guests, Toyota Hiace for 5–10 guests with luggage.
  • Driver who speaks working English and knows the mountain sections, fuel stops and where the road is under repair.
  • Fuel, tolls, parking and the driver’s own meals and accommodation on multi-day routes — quoted inside the fare, not added later.
  • Airport pickup at Komodo Airport (LBJ) with a name board, including waiting time for delayed arrivals.
  • Flexible stops at Cancar spider-web rice fields, Ranamese Lake, Bena or Luba traditional village, Blue Stone Beach and Ende’s Bung Karno exile house.
  • Pre-dawn departure for the Kelimutu sunrise, normally leaving Moni around 04:00 so you are at the viewpoint before first light.

Not included: your own hotels and meals, Kelimutu National Park entrance tickets, village donations and local guide fees. Park rates are set by the park authority and paid on the spot — they change from time to time, so we quote them as “payable at the gate” rather than locking a figure for years ahead.

How do you book, and how far ahead?

Booking is quote-based over WhatsApp so nobody pays for a package that does not match their flights. Send four things: your arrival flight and date into Labuan Bajo, the number of passengers and large bags, how many nights you can give the road, and where the charter should end — back in Labuan Bajo, or one-way at Ende or Maumere. We reply with a written fixed fare in USD, the day-by-day split and the vehicle assigned. Confirmation is by deposit; the balance is settled in cash or by transfer before the final day.

Two to three weeks of notice is comfortable. In the July–August and Christmas–New Year peaks, long-distance Flores drivers are booked out early, so a month ahead is safer. Last-minute requests are sometimes possible — ask rather than assume.

What does it cost?

Indicative private-charter ranges as of 2026, per vehicle and not per person:

Service Vehicle Indicative fare (USD)
Labuan Bajo → Moni/Kelimutu, one-way, 2 days Avanza / Innova from ~$390–520
Labuan Bajo → Kelimutu → Ende, 3 days Avanza / Innova from ~$520–680
Round trip Labuan Bajo → Kelimutu → Labuan Bajo, 4–5 days Avanza / Innova from ~$780–1,050
Any of the above, larger group Hiace (up to 10 seats) add ~35–50%

These figures are indicative, not a live quote. The final fare depends on season, fuel price, the end point, the number of driving days and whether you take the slower Ruteng split. We put the confirmed number in writing on WhatsApp before you pay anything, and it does not move unless you change the itinerary — unlike the OTA listings for this region, where the headline figure is a placeholder and the real cost appears only after your card details do.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do Labuan Bajo to Kelimutu in one day?

Physically yes, sensibly no. It is 12–14 hours of continuous mountain driving, you arrive after dark, and you still need to be up at 04:00 for the sunrise. Anyone quoting a same-day round trip is either exaggerating or planning to drive faster than we will.

Is the road actually safe?

The Trans-Flores highway is sealed almost end to end but narrow, steep and endlessly winding, with landslide repairs in the wet season and trucks on blind corners. Bring motion-sickness medication if you are prone to it. We assign drivers who run this route regularly, not whoever is free that morning.

What time do we leave Moni for the sunrise?

Around 04:00. The drive to the upper parking area takes 30–40 minutes, then a 20–30 minute walk on steps and paved path to the main viewpoint. Bring a jacket and a torch — the summit is cold before dawn. Mist can close in even in dry season, so treat a clear sunrise as luck, not a guarantee.

Can the charter continue to Maumere or Bali?

Maumere, yes — it adds roughly four hours beyond Moni and is a common one-way ending for travellers flying out east. Bali is not a driving route from Flores; you fly from Ende, Maumere or back from Labuan Bajo.
